Getting started

From download to your first protected file, in four steps.

1. Install

Windows
Download the .exe file and run it. On first launch Windows may show a SmartScreen warning: choose “More info”, then “Run anyway”.
Linux
On Debian and Ubuntu install the .deb package. On any other distribution use the AppImage file: make it executable and run it.

Go to the download

2. Create your vault

Choose a password
It is the only thing to remember. Make it long: a sentence beats a word.
Put the 24 words away
They are shown to you once. Write them on paper and keep them away from the computer: they are the only way back in if you forget the password.
Private profile, if you want it
It is chosen now and not changed afterwards. It also disguises file sizes and name lengths, in exchange for a little more space.

What it protects and what it does not

3. Connect your cloud

Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive
Sign-in happens in your browser, on the provider’s site. CryptoUpload does not see your password.
S3, SFTP, WebDAV
Enter the address and credentials of your storage. For SFTP you are shown the server’s fingerprint to confirm.
Just a disk
You can also keep the vault in a folder or on an external disk, with no cloud at all.

Provider not listed? Suggest it

4. Use it

Sync a folder
Pick a folder on your computer: every change is encrypted and uploaded by itself.
Or open the drive
Mount the vault as a drive and work on the files with the programs you always use.
When you are done
Lock the vault. Without the password, only unreadable blocks remain on the computer and in the cloud.
